What Type of Electric Vehicle is for Me?

Shopping for a new car can be exciting! However, it can also be a bit overwhelming since there is a lot to consider, especially if you are considering making the jump to electric. Deciding which EV is right for you depends on a few things, like how many miles a day you drive, whether you will be taking long trips, whether you have a place to plug in the car, and, of course, your budget. Below, you will find an explanation of the different EV types to help you choose the best fit for your lifestyle and budget.

The Different Types of Electrified Vehicles

HEVs, PHEVs, BEVs, and there are so many acronyms used to describe electrified vehicles it could make your head spin. Simply put, there are three main types of electric vehicles: Battery Electric or BEV, Plug-in Hybrid or PHEV, and Hybrid HEV. Battery electric vehicles do not have traditional engines at all. Instead, they rely on electricity from a large battery that powers the electric motor. BEVs must be recharged by plugging the car into an external power source such as a charging station. Plug-in hybrids are the bridge between regular vehicles and BEVs. They offer a gasoline engine and an electric battery pack that can be recharged by plugging it in. Finally, hybrids are propelled by a gasoline-powered engine paired with an electric motor. However, there is no need to plug them in as the engine recharges the battery.

Will you be able to charge at home?

If you plan to go with either a BEV or a PHEV, it is always best to charge them at home, so if you don't have a designated parking spot with access to an outlet, you may want to consider going with a Hybrid, as they don't need to be plugged in. With their smaller batteries, PHEVs can be charged overnight using a standard 120-volt outlet. If you are thinking of getting a BEV, then it is recommended that you have a Level 2 charging unit installed as their batteries are larger and will take far too long to charge on a standard 120-volt outlet or Level 1 charger.

Do You Plan To Travel Long Distances?

The average round-trip commute for work is about 55 minutes, which most EVs on the market today can cover. However, this will mean that you will need to plug it in every night. So again, if you don't plan on recharging every night or live where charging isn't available, you will want to research destination charging options. There are public charging stations if your heart is set on a BEV. Some charging stations are Level 2, and some are DC Fast chargers.
