Certified Pre-Owned vs. Used
Certified Pre-Owned vs. Used: What's the Difference?

The main difference between a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle and a standard used car is who sets the standards and who backs the coverage. A factory-backed certified vehicle meets the automaker's age and mileage limits, passes the program's multi-point inspection and carries a warranty backed by the manufacturer. A standard used car has no universal age or mileage cap and carries whatever coverage the dealer offers, if any.
Dealer certification is a third path. At Lynch Mukwonago, used vehicles that pass our own 168-point inspection can qualify as Lynch Certified. It's separate from any factory program, so knowing which one you're looking at helps you compare value accurately.

What Changed for GM Certified Vehicles in 2026
If you've shopped certified Chevrolet, Buick or GMC vehicles before, the program looks different now. Starting in June 2026, GM moved its Chevrolet, Buick and GMC certified pre-owned program to CarBravo, its used-vehicle certification platform, while Cadillac kept its own separate program (GM Authority, citing Reuters). Unlike the former program, which certified only GM brands, CarBravo can certify qualifying vehicles of any make (GM Authority).
CarBravo also changes the coverage. The former program's 6-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty is not part of CarBravo (GM Authority). Instead, CarBravo-tier vehicles carry a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty in addition to any remaining original factory warranty (Kelley Blue Book).

| Tier | Vehicle Age | Mileage | Inspection | Limited Warranty |

| BravoBudget | 10 to 15 model years | Up to 150,000 miles | 62-point | 30-day/1,000-mile powertrain |

Three Ways a Used Vehicle Reaches the Lot
Factory-backed programs are run by the automaker and sold through that brand's franchised dealers (NerdWallet). Dealer certification programs like Lynch Certified set their own inspection standards and back the coverage at the dealership level. Standard used vehicles cover the widest range of ages, mileage and condition. In Wisconsin, every used vehicle a licensed dealer offers must display a Wisconsin Buyers Guide disclosing known problems found during the dealer's inspection (WisDOT).
| Feature | GM CarBravo (CarBravo Tier) | Lynch Certified | Standard Used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who backs the coverage | GM | Lynch Mukwonago | Varies by seller |
| Eligibility | Under 10 model years and 100,000 miles | Must pass a 168-point inspection | No universal age or mileage limit |
| Inspection | 126-point | 168-point | Dealer inspection disclosed on the Wisconsin Buyers Guide |
| Limited warranty | 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper, plus any remaining factory warranty | 90-day/3,000-mile Certified Guarantee plus Lynch Protected coverage | Varies; may be sold As-Is |
| Exchange policy | 10-day/500-mile | 10-day/500-mile | Varies |

How Warranties, Roadside Assistance and Exchanges Compare
GM CarBravo (Factory-Backed)
CarBravo's 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty covers vehicles under 10 model years and 100,000 miles, in addition to any remaining factory warranty (Kelley Blue Book). Roadside assistance runs for the duration of the CarBravo limited warranty (CarBravo), and the 10-day/500-mile vehicle exchange program lets you swap for another CarBravo vehicle if it isn't the right fit (CarBravo). Every CarBravo vehicle includes a free CARFAX Vehicle History Report (CarBravo), dealers complete all safety recalls before a CarBravo vehicle is listed or sold (Findlay Chevrolet), and warranty repairs can be handled at roughly 4,000 GM dealerships nationwide (GM Authority).

Lynch Certified (Dealer-Backed)
Each Lynch Certified vehicle includes a 90-day/3,000-mile Certified Guarantee, a 10-day/500-mile exchange policy, a free vehicle history report, 12 months of road hazard protection, a complimentary first oil change and Lynch Protected coverage. Lynch Protected applies to qualified vehicles with fewer than 100,000 miles and less than 10 years of age. See dealer for details and exclusions.

Standard Used
Coverage on a standard used vehicle depends on the seller. In Wisconsin, a vehicle sold with no dealer warranty is marked "As-Is" on the window sticker, and the Wisconsin Buyers Guide shows whether any dealer warranty or remaining manufacturer new-car warranty applies (WisDOT).

How Much More Does a Certified Pre-Owned Car Cost?
A certified pre-owned vehicle typically costs about 4% to 5% more than a comparable non-certified used vehicle, according to Edmunds sales data (Edmunds via AP). That difference reflects the inspection, the reconditioning and the cost of the extended coverage.
To offset that premium, automaker finance companies sometimes offer promotional rates on select certified models (Capital One). These offers change month to month and vary by model, term and credit approval, so ask what's available on the vehicle you're considering.

| Cost Factor | Certified Pre-Owned | Standard Used |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | About 4% to 5% more on average (Edmunds via AP) | Baseline market pricing |
| Reconditioning | Certification inspection and reconditioning built into the price | Varies; buyer may absorb deferred maintenance |
| Financing | May qualify for promotional automaker rates on select models | Standard used-vehicle loan rates |
| Out-of-pocket repair risk | Lower while warranty coverage is active | Higher once any dealer coverage ends |

Weighing total cost of ownership means balancing the upfront price against future repair risk. A standard used car may cost less at the start, but the buyer takes on repair costs once any limited dealer warranty ends. Certified buyers pay a bit more up front for warranty-backed repair coverage.
Common Pre-Owned Buyer Questions
Are standard used cars inspected before they're sold?
In Wisconsin, yes. Licensed dealers must inspect used vehicles and disclose known problems on the Wisconsin Buyers Guide window label (WisDOT). Those inspections aren't governed by an automaker's certification checklist, though, and they don't come with a factory-backed warranty.

Can any dealer sell a factory-backed certified vehicle?
No. Factory-backed certified vehicles are sold through the brand's franchised dealers (NerdWallet). "Certified" can also describe a dealer program like Lynch Certified. Dealer-backed programs may limit where covered repairs can be done, while manufacturer-backed warranties can typically be serviced across the brand's dealer network (Chase), so ask who backs the coverage before you compare prices.

Does a certified pre-owned warranty cover brake pads and tires?
Generally, no. Normal wear-and-tear items such as tires, windshield wipers, light bulbs and brake pads are generally not included (Autotrader). Review the program's list of exclusions before you buy.

What if I change my mind shortly after buying?
Exchange policies vary by program. GM's CarBravo program includes a 10-day/500-mile vehicle exchange (CarBravo), and Lynch Certified includes a 10-day/500-mile exchange policy. Terms and eligible vehicles vary, so review the details before you sign.
