The Stellantis “Drive for Design” Contest

The 2021 Stellantis “Drive for Design” Contest

Stellantis does really cool things. Want a good example? Knowing the some of the best automotive ideas come from young artists, the company sponsors an annual “Drive for Design” contest for U.S. high school students with the winners receiving very special rewards.

Every year the design challenge is different but the 2021 Drive for Design contest asks students in grades 10-12 to sketch a futuristic, electrified Jeep vehicle. Entries are due by May 14, 2021 and three students will be named winners from all entries received.

Mark Trostle, Head of Ram Truck and Mopar Design at Stellantis, is the executive behind this contest and he knows something about the corporate pathways of young designers -he won a similar contest as a high school student.

Do Drive for Design winners get more than just recognition?

They sure do. Prizes include one-on-one mentoring time with leading designers at the Stellantis Design Studios and the winners are offered scholarships to attend the College for Creative Studies virtual summer design program.

The College for Creative Studies (CCS) is located in downtown Detroit and famously educates artists and designers.  It is a private, fully accredited college, and enrolls more than 1,400 students pursuing Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees. The summer program includes special courses on the fundamentals of gestural sketching, drawing automotive concepts in perspective, and how to translate designs into 3D models.

What is the history of the contest?

The Stellantis Product Design Office created its Drive for Design contest in 2013. The original contest was started in Detroit for local artists but soon the company, then called Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), expanded it into a national contest.

“Since the contest began nine years ago, we’ve been able to connect and help many young artists establish a career path in automotive design,” said Trostle. “In fact, we’ve had previous contestants as summer interns and recently we hired a former winner who is now working in one of the design studios. Regardless of where these students ultimately land, it’s rewarding to our team to be able make an impact on someone’s career.”

What are the design contest details?

Entries are due by May 14, 2021. The Stellantis Product Design Office can be contacted through their Facebook page Drive for Design.
